Why I Don't Watch TV

I can't stand the violence. There was violence on almost every channel tonight. Even Sundance had this film, "Monster." Although it's a good film, I am not interested in being haunted by violent scenes. Why does it always have to be about violence? Most people don't live like that. Movies (primarily Hollywood films) and history focus on violence.

Why is it that the so called ordinary lives somehow are deemed not interesting? More people lead ordinary, non-violent lives. Why doesn't the majority win here? Why???

Why does it always have to be idiotic people in idiotic situations? I never saw anyone on TV that even slightly resembled anyone I knew.....

With few exceptions, Slug, it's a world all its own, unlike anything we know in real life, and maybe that's why it has influenced the entire population - because it takes them away from the so called "real" life. It just seems that it has become worse. There used to be good shows in the past, and now I can't seem to find anything worth watching. But I especially hate the violence... And I agree that there is an abundance of idiots portrayed matter-of-factly as "normal" people on TV

This "TV thing" is an interesting subject. Here's a question that needs to be asked: Why don't cable tv companies offer some more interesting packages? Here's an example: If I were to order cable, I'd want: 2 or three news channels, a history channel, a music channel, court TV, a "vintage" tv show channel, and the "major network" channels. We're talking maybe 10 channels- not 250. And I would expect to pay no more than $20 per month. What's so unreasonable about this? In the meantime, I just have Netflix- I refuse to participate in the scam that is pay television.

I got rid of cable last year and never regretted it. I had refused to pay the extra $12 to keep "standard" cable over the basic package and was punished by having TCM and sundance removed. The cable reception was horrible too. The cable company told me my TV was too old. Oddly, I have no problem with the picture from my current digital setup. If I watch TV I mostly watch PBS and some network shows.

I agree with plagueofparadox, why can't we order cable channels a la carte? Wasn't there some talk about changing that some years back?

I quit that machine in 1973, Gyspsy. It was that program "all in the family" that triggered my dislike for the medium. I'll go 'out' to watch baseball or soccer and maybe a violent 'nature' show but I won't have a TV in my home!

Paradox and Dalcini, I agree with both of you. Where I am, you can pick the channels you are interested in - like all the film channels - but you still pay full price for all the crap you will never watch.

IQ, I remember that, as well as your former handle, too

You're picking the wrong stuff. While I am not averse to violence, particularly if it is an Angelina Jolie or Kate Beckinsale or Jennifer Garner sticking it to the bad guys, I don't seek it out for its own sake. And there's always plenty to watch.

One of the reasons I pay attention to popular culture is to be attuned to my neighbors. It is easy, especially with the Internet available, to lock oneself into an Ivory Tower world to the point where I cannot communicate with real people at all.

Gatos, now, now: don't make assumptions about me, please. This particular one is very wrong. Sorry to burst your temporary bubble

If you look at the two sentences that I posted again, you might notice that I said nothing about you at all.

Gatos, yes, you did. You said I was picking the wrong stuff. The rest wasn't about me, and I know you wanted to share with me what you watched. Believe me, I am always conscious of your best intentions, please don't question that. However, you do make assumptions about me. This is not the first time. That's OK, I don't take it seriously
